Indians on cusp of Fall Classic date with Rockies
(10.17.07)
CLEVELAND (AP) -- There's another team roaring through October.
The Cleveland Indians are on a 32-and-11 run and on the verge of
their first World Series appearance in 10 years. The Indians beat
Boston 7-3 to take a 3-1 lead in the American League Championship
Series last night.
Casey Blake's solo homer started a seven-run fifth inning off
knuckleballer Tim Wakefield last night. Jhonny Peralta added a
three-run home run. Blake came up again and delivered a bloop
single that scored Kenny Lofton, who singled and stole second. Paul
Byrd got the win with five-plus innings, allowing two runs.
Boston's Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez hit
consecutive solo home runs in the top of the sixth. It's the first
time in league championship series history that a team has hit
three consecutive home runs.
There's an off day today. The Indians can earn a World Series
trip against Colorado with a victory Thursday night in Cleveland.
The Red Sox will pitch their 20-game winner Josh Beckett against
19-game winner C.C. Sabathia for Cleveland.
The Indians haven't won a World Series since 1948.
