Torre does that NY-to-LA thing
(11.02.07)
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Joe Torre has completed a coast-to-coast
odyssey by signing a three-year contract to manage the Los Angeles
Dodgers. It comes less than 48 hours after Grady Little resigned
from the position, and two weeks after Torre walked away from the
New York Yankees.
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti says what Torre accomplished in a dozen
seasons with the Yankees "is as powerful as any manager in recent
memory."
Torre won four World Series titles and guided the Yanks into
postseason play each of his 12 seasons with the team. He turned
down the team's offer of a guaranteed 5 million dollars to return
for a 13th campaign in the Bronx. It would have been a
2-million-dollar cut in pay if the Yankees didn't make the
playoffs.
Torre takes over a club that finished fourth in the NL West. The
franchise hasn't won a World Series since 1988.
