Patriots still a threat for 16-and-0...Owens haunts Eagles in return to Philly
(11.05.07) UNDATED (AP) -- The New England Patriots still have a shot at the
NFL's first undefeated season since Miami did it in 1972 -- and
they have Tom Brady to thank. Brady rallied the Pats to a pair of
fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat previously undefeated
Indianapolis 24-20 in the biggest regular-season game in the NFL in
years. The Pats defense bent but didn't break, sacking Indy QB a
season-high three times. Manning suffered a late turnover that
prevented any last-minute rally.
The victory moves New England to 9-and-0. Perhaps more
importantly, it gives the Pats the tiebreaker that would force
Indianapolis to play at New England if the teams would meet in the
postseason.
In other Week 9 results:
-- Nearly two years after Terrell Owens was banished from the
Eagles, the star receiver caught 10 passes for 174 yards and one
touchdown to help the Dallas Cowboys dismantle Philadelphia 38-17.
Tony Romo threw three TD passes. Marion Barber had 106 total yards
and one score and the NFC East-leading Cowboys improved to 7-and-1
for the first time since 1995.
-- Minnesota rookie Adrian Peterson ran for an NFL-record 296
yards in his eighth game as a pro, helping the Minnesota Vikings
upset San Diego 35-17. Peterson scored two of his three touchdowns
in the second half. Peterson has 1,036 yards rushing for the season
and is on pace to break Eric Dickerson's rookie record of 1,808
yards set in 1983. Dickerson's all-time record of 2,105 yards in
1984 is not out of the question.
-- Jon Kitna threw two touchdown passes and the Detroit Lions
scored twice on defense in their 44-7 rout over Denver. The Lions
are 6-and-2 with their third straight win. In the Super Bowl era,
76 percent of the 146 teams that started 6-and-2 made the playoffs.
-- Brett Favre (fahrv) has now beaten every team in the league
for his Green Bay Packers. The future Hall of Famer hit Greg
Jennings for a 60-yard touchdown pass with 3:05 left and the
Packers beat Kansas City 33-22 for their sixth straight road win.
The Pack is 7-and-1 with a one-game lead over Detroit in the NFC
North.
-- Tennessee's defense is for real and the Titans stayed in the
playoff hunt in the AFC by dismantling Carolina 20-7. It's the
sixth time this year the Titans have held a team to 14 or fewer
points. Albert Haynesworth had three of the Titans' season-high
seven sacks.
-- Tampa Bay is 5-and-4 and surpassed last year's victory total
with a 17-10 win over Arizona. Jeff Garcia hooked up with Joey
Galloway on a 37-yard TD pass.
-- New Orleans overwhelmed Jacksonville 41-24 for the Saints'
fourth straight win. Drew Brees threw for 445 yards and three
touchdowns.
-- Washington tipped the New York Jets 23-20 in overtime. Shaun
Suisham (SHWEES'-huhm) tied a Redskins record with his fifth field
goal, a 46-yarder with 7:43 left in OT. Clinton Portis ran for 196
yards and a touchdown on 36 carries.
-- Buffalo's Marshawn Lynch passed for a score and ran for one
as the Bills beat Cincinnati 33-21 as the Bills reached 4-and-4. He
finished the game with a career-best 153 yards rushing.
-- In a matchup of the teams 2-and-6 records, Atlanta beat San
Francisco 20-16. Warrick Dunn ran for 100 yards and a touchdown.
-- Cleveland downed Seattle 33-30 in overtime to improve to
5-and-3. Phil Dawson hit a 25 yard field goal in overtime.
-- The Houston Texans were led by Ron Dayne and Sage Rosenfels
as they beat Oakland 24-17. Dayne carried the ball 21 times for 122
yards and one score while Rosenfels connected with Andre Davis on a
42-yard touchdown pass midway in the final quarter.
Tonight's game is a good one on paper. The Baltimore Ravens, who
beat Pittsburgh twice last season, visit the Steel City to play the
AFC North-leading Steelers.
