    For the second time this month, a pilot has had to land his troubled single-engine plane on the same highway in Suffolk County, police said. Frank Fierro took off from Lufker/Spadaro Airport in East Moriches Friday afternoon but very quickly had to make an emergency landing on Sunrise Highway at about 12:50 p.m. because of engine trouble, police said.

    Long Island Rail Road workers were breathing a sigh of relief on Friday as a strike by LIRR workers was averted. Union negotiators and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reached a tentative contract agreement a day earlier. As many 300,000 commuters would have needed to find alternate transportation had a strike occurred.

    The Suffolk County Health Department has issued a bathing advisory at 66 beaches in the county because of water runoff from heavy rainfall. Storm water runoff can cause bacterial spikes at beaches. A few rounds of tidal flushing usually cleans out these beaches.

    North Hills, a small village on the north shore of Long Island, is set to expand the so-called pooper scooper law to include a dog owner's property. The mayor said it is a health issue. If a dog decides to poop on public property in North Hills, its owner must quickly pick up the droppings. Mayor Marvin Natiss on Wednesday expects to expand that ordinance to require dog owners to pick up their animal's poop even if it's on the dog owner's property.

    The unions representing workers for the Long Island Rail Road are set to strike beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday. On Friday, Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife and children will head to Italy on a 10-day vacation. While the time off had been in the works for the First Family of New York City for some time, it was not clear until Monday that the LIRR would essentially be shut down due to striking workers. De Blasio says he's going overseas anyway.

Like so many, I watched as Sandy reduced our beach-side towns to rubble. In the two years that have passed, the focus has been on rebuilding getting people back on their feet. But what if you could fight Mother Nature?Hurricanes are fueled by the heat and energy in warm ocean water.

    Long Island's own Daniel Fletcher is competing this year in powerlifting at the Special Olympics 2014 USA Games New Jersey in June. His parents, Warren and Edna Fletcher, will be there every step of the way as both mom and dad and as coaches. They help coach Daniel and the entire East End Powerlifters.
