Fire at construction site of ONE DAYTONA

- Construction came to a halt at One Daytona on Friday after a fire broke out where a movie theater is being built.   Plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles away, as crews responded to the blaze just before noon.

Justin Oliveira works nearby and snapped a picture. "Lot of flames really high on top of the building," he said.  "It stinks! A lot of money going on over there, you hate to see all that progress and then it burns."

Investigators say the fire started while welding was taking place on the roof.  Twenty-five workers were on top of the structure and had fire extinguishers, but they were unable to put out the fire.

"They attempted to put out the fire; however, with elevated winds at 14 miles an hour currently, also with an elevated building, they were unable to put out the fire," said Daytona Beach Fire spokesperson Sasha Staton.

Firefighters arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. No one was injured. The fire affected a 300-square-foot area.  It is unknown if there is any structural damage at this point.  It is the site where retail shops are being built for the mixed-use project across from Daytona International Speedway.  "We need someone to come in to inspect it to make sure it didn’t weaken any of the beams. Or structural integrity of the project," said International Speedway Corporation spokesman Craig Neeb.

Neeb said the fire should not delay construction of One Daytona. "We’re confident that this does not impact the overall schedule of the project."  He added that the fire will have no impact on the Country 500 Music Festival happening at the Speedway.
