PALM BAY, Fla. - I-95 northbound will be shut down for most of the day Thursday because of a fatal crash involving a semi and multiple other vehicles.
The crash happened around mile marker 177 near Palm Bay around 9:30 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol says that the crash happened when a semi hauling a large excavator had a tire tread separation.
That truck driver lost control of the semi and traveled through the guardrail. The excavator came off the trailer and went into the northbound lanes of I-95 where it hit a truck. Two other vehicles traveling northbound were hit with debris, but neither of those drivers was injured.
The driver of the semi was taken to the hospital. The other truck driver was pronounced dead on scene.
The northbound lanes have debris and fuel on them. Once all the debris is cleared, engineers will still have to determine if the fuel damaged the road.
The northbound lanes were closed until the evening hours Thursday. The southbound lanes were briefly shut down Thursday morning, but reopened.
