The shootings happened at the Carolina Club Apartments, at 124 Carolina Lake Drive. Detectives said there was some sort of argument involving the victims, Timesha Carswell and Diona McDonald, both 21, and Bodden, when the roommates told Bodden they didn't want him living in the apartment anymore and tried to return $200 of his rent money. Investigators believe Bodden had been dating Carswell and was living in the apartment for about a week. Police believe the women, and roommate Micah Parham, 21, intended to evict Bodden and had asked a friend, Sidney Washington, to come over to assist.
"Bodden refuses to leave and a fight ensues," said Chitwood. "You can see where someone was shoved through sheet rock. You can see there was a fight. At some point during the struggle, Washington arms himself with a knife and says, 'Look man, we can't be doing this. Someone is going to get killed.'"
Bodden agreed to leave, but then he returned minutes later with a gun, Chitwood said. Things quickly turned violent. Chief Chitwood says Washington tried to stop Bodden.
"He [Washington] fights with him, knocks the gun out of his hand. Bodden regains the firearm. It jams. Washington knows what's about to happen, makes a run for it, and dives through the window and hears a series of shots."
Carswell and McDonald were shot in the head and died at the scene, Chitwood said. Parham dove into a closet to take cover, but Chitwood said Bodden fired into the closet multiple times, striking him. "Our gunman chases Micah into a closet and fires at least three shots at him in the closet," said Chitwood. Parham was taken to Halifax Medical Center "in grave condition," authorities said.
The three shooting victims have been identified as Michigan residents who attend Bethune-Cookman University. Washington is also a B-CU student; however, Bodden is not a student at the school.
"This would have been a quadruple homicide had Sidney Washington not gotten out of that window," Chitwood added.
According to police, Bodden has previously served time in prison for various crimes related to kidnapping, robbery and drug-related charges.
