ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A 9-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot on New Year's Day while leaving church.
Orlando Police responded to Majestic Life Church off of South Kirkman Road after receiving reports of a shooting just after midnight. Upon arrival, officers located the 9-year-old with an apparent gunshot wound to her right arm. Police believe the bullet came from celebratory gunfire, marking the new year. The child was treated at the scene by paramedics and a church supervisor tells FOX 35 that the little girl is doing ok.
A parishioner at the church said he assisted the child after she was struck by the bullet. "My wife and I saw and heard the gunshots, but we weren't sure if they were fireworks or gunshots, and the mother of the girl was screaming, 'Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Sshe's been shot!' And she had a wound on her arm," explained Claude Eugene. "I was very upset, because we just came out of the church, and it's a bad way to start the new year, so I was helping out the mother, stopped the bleeding by applying pressure, and the police arrived later on."
Eugene said there was no room for the ambulance to reach the child, because of heavy traffic, so he ended up carrying the girl down the streets so they would have better access for her. "It's tragic," Eugene added, "because now you want justice to be done out there, and it's sad that people are irresponsible shooting guns."
The name of the child wasn't released. Police said they do not have any suspects and the bullet was never found.
