Alachua County deputies said a detention officer was arrested and accused of driving drunk early Saturday morning.
Deputies said around 3:35 a.m., Saturday, several 911 calls came in about a car that was driving the wrong way on U. S. Highway 441. The callers said the driver was going north in the southbound lanes of the road.
Alachua County deputies and Gainesville police responded to the call and found the car at the intersection of U.S. Highway 41 and SW Williston Road. Deputies said the driver was unresponsive and sitting behind the wheel.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Hamza Ahmed Amer, was given several field sobriety tests and deputies said he was taken into custody.
At the jail, deputies said Amer was booked in for DUI after he blew a .188.
Deputies said Amer was hired by the Alachua County Sheriff's Office in September 2015 and was assigned as a detention officer.
Officials said Amer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
