Dump truck hits and kills 2 while trying to free stalled truck

A construction worker driving a dump truck fatally struck a man and woman as they tried to pull a stalled pickup truck out of soft dirt in central Florida.

It was an emotional scene on Friday at the scene where 22-year-old Jessica Darby and 29-year-old Kevin Walsh died on Thursday night.  The Florida Highway Patrol says the incident happened in a construction zone near Palm Coast.

According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, Walsh got his pick up truck stuck in the sand of a construction site on Forest Grove Road. Troopers say Walsh called a friend and his friend's fiance, Jessica Darby to come help try and pull him out. When that didn't work they asked a dump truck driver to help. After several attempts of that not working, the driver was backing up to leave the scene when troopers say he accidentally ran over and killed Walsh and Darby. Darby was 8 months pregnant.

"He was a very, very, good guy, very loving, very caring.  I just don't understand it. I don't understand it. Kevin, I love you and I miss you, kid!" said Kenneth Walsh, Kevin's uncle.

FHP says they have not determined if any citations or charges will be filed against the dump truck driver. The driver was so upset at the scene, deputies had to take him to a nearby hospital with chest pains.
