FDLE investigates fatal shooting in Marion County involving deputy

- There are still many unanswered questions in a deputy-involved shooting that left a man dead in Marion County.  Joseph Napoli, 59, of Marion County, was pronounced dead on the scene Monday

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said detectives were investigating Napoli as an alleged suspect in a child molestation case.  Detectives asked for help from patrol to help find him. Deputy Jessica Wilkes found Napoli’s vehicle pulled over at 15990 NE 160th Avenue Road in Hog Valley, and when she approached his car she saw that he had a handgun.

Investigators said that Napoli raised his gun and Deputy Wilkes fired her weapon at the same time Napoli fired his gun.

Kathleen Crumb, who lives near shooting scene told Fox 35  "I did hear a gunshot, but it's so common around this neighborhood, that you don't pay attention to the gunshots or anything that goes on."  She added, "It's kind of scary. It's kind of scary."

Deputy Wilkes wasn't hurt, but she is on paid leave, pending the investigation.   Marion County Sheriff’s spokesperson Lauren Lettelier said,  “It is unknown at this time if our deputy’s bullet actually struck Napoli.”

Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesperson Molly Best said the agency is investigating and added,  "We cannot comment on open investigations"

Here's more information on what we've learned about deputy Wilkes. The Sheriff's Office in Marion County says she's started served as a Corrections Officer in May 2009, then as a deputy sheriff since October 2009.
