ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A standoff has ended peacefully after a SWAT unit with the Orlando Police Department arrested an armed suspect was taken into custody.
Officers first responded to reports of shots being fired at the Cornerstone Apartments on Conway Road early Thursday. Afterward, they tracked 23-year-old Tremon Jones to an apartment where there were two children.
Orlando Police spokesperson Wanda Miglio said the two toddlers were removed from the home safely, “The children did come to the bedroom window, the back bedroom, and that’s when SWAT members were able to retrieve both the children outside of the window."
"They sent the glass breakers in. They had this big pole, and I just saw glass flying," explained neighbor Jennifer Parker. "I saw a plant fly. They were just throwing things like it was nothing."
Police took Jones into custody just after 1 p.m. They said the two children belonged to his girlfriend. "This is a very dangerous situation where you have someone that is just firing, and those bullets could’ve hit someone, and thankfully that did not happen," Miglio added. "We did not know the state of his mind, if he wanted to hurt children, if he wanted to hurt residents.”
Those who know Jones said it was unlike him to act this way. “This is kind of a sad story, because he takes such good care of these kids, and I don’t know where these kids are going to end up," said Parker. "He wasn’t himself, so I think that’s why it took so long."
Jones was expected to be booked into the Orange County Jail, following questioning.
