A mom fights back as a stranger tries to steal her car with her young daughter in the back seat. Now the Brevard County mom is talking about the dramatic struggle and how she stopped a carjacking.
Amanda Beaudry is a weekend warrior. Sunday she thwarted a carjacking in her drive way in Malabar. She told FOX 35 News, “My only concern was making sure he did not get this car out of the vicinity it was already in. I’m like there’s no way this man is taking my car with my child in it, there’s no way.”
Beaudry had just put her seventeen month old daughter in the car seat to go to the store. Two men walked up the driveway asking for a ride. One of them ran away, but the other tried to steal her wheels.
She set the scene for us. “I am on that side of the vehicle, and I dove into the passenger side, and he put the car directly into reverse.”
Now the car is backing down the driveway and Beaudry is battling a carjacker. She mustered the strength to break the key inside the ignition and then she forced the car into park.
Seconds later, deputies pulled up with guns drawn and busted twenty year old Stephane Johnson right there in the car. Deputies arrested twenty-three year old Kelvin Houston a little later.
Amanda’s dad, David Beaudry, is a former cop. He’s proud of his daughter. “She’s been taught how to take care of herself and when to back down and when not to. Fortunately for herself and my granddaughter, she did the right thing at the right time.”
Police were chasing Johnson and Houston in a stolen car when they ditched it in a pond. They hustled down a quiet country road trying to escape, and that’s where Johnson met his match against a determined mom.
Beaudry says, “It was just momma bear instinct is what everyone keeps telling me. I think that’s just what it was.”
Johnson is charged with carjacking. Houston is charged with loitering and prowling.
