Man arrested, accused of trying to drown dog in Daytona Beach pond

FOX 35 News at 6 p.m.

- Bobby Owens says he could not hardly believe what he was seeing. It was a late Sunday afternoon and the Daytona Beach was sitting on the back porch of his Bethune Street home. As the retired animal control worker looked out at the pond in North Street Park he says he saw a man throwing things at his white pit bull.

Then, he says the man took it a potentially deadly step further. That's when Owens called police and told them he was watching a man try to drown a dog.  "When you read the report, and you look at the officer's body camera video, you think 'This guy's a real scum bag!'" said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

Officers got to the scene and rushed the dog to an Ormond Beach animal hospital.  "Dog made it. It was cleared this morning," said Chitwood.  "The dog is now out at the SPCA, and hopefully, somebody is going to adopt it and give it a really good home."

Officers arrested 35-year-old Kurtis Kimble.  He is charged with animal cruelty.
