Scott suspends Tavares mayor after insurance fraud charge

FOX 35 News at 5 p.m.

- Governor Rick Scott issued an executive order Thursday afternoon to suspending Mayor Robert Wolfe.  The order said it was in the best interest of the people of Tavares to remove Wolfe.

Wolfe was charged Wednesday with insurance fraud.  State investigators say Wolfe made a false claim for more than $9,000 on his homeowners insurance and lied to the company when he told them he had to vacate his home on Lakeshore Boulevard after a plumbing problem.

City Administrator John Drury told FOX 35 Thursday afternoon that the mayor’s arrest and suspension a “distraction,” but it will not affect the good things that are happening in Tavares.

“I think folks are concerned that the projects that we’re working on will continue to move forward and the answer to that is an unequivocal yes, those projects will move forward,” Drury said.

According to Drury, if the charges against Wolfe are dropped or he is found not guilty he could be reinstated as mayor.

City Commissioner Lori Phister became acting mayor upon Wolfe’s suspension.
