A Volusia County man was arrested following a standoff with a SWAT unit that began around 1 a.m. on Wednesday in Ormond Beach. Police officers said a man held his wife and two children at gunpoint. Detectives said Kevin Hamilton, 36, also fired several rounds from a gun inside his home, breaking a window. His family was able to escape, although investigators said Hamilton did not appear to be targeting them.
"It was a domestic violence situation that got way out of control," said Keith Walker with the Ormond Beach Police Department. Multiple units showed up, including the SWAT team, and surrounded the home. "We evacuated the area houses, and the sheriff dispatch put out a reverse 911 call for a mile perimeter to let them know that something is going on here please don't come out to this area."
Neighbors were trapped inside their homes for hours. At 8:30 a.m., police officers executed search warrants and made their move inside the home. "As they were approaching, Kevin Hamilton, the suspect in this incident, he came out and gave up peacefully," added Waker.
Police say they've been called to their house in the past. Hamilton is charged with several felonies, including aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic violence, and child abuse.
