FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla (WOFL FOX 35) - Firefighters on Friday battled a wildfire in the Daytona North area of Flagler County. Some evacuations were ordered, as dozens of home are located in that area. The roughly 40-acre fire was 80 percent contained just before midnight
Attempts to calm the flames included assistance from helicopters that dropped 52 loads of water from above and bulldozers that carved fire lines to stop it from spreading.
"We were able to see smoke, and the closer we got to home, the more… everywhere we turned, we were driving towards it," said Donald Fawkes.
Florida Forest Service officials say that, as they fought the fire, the wind fought them, helping the flames to jump road after road.
"The more we try to contain it, the winds keep pushing it farther ahead," said Julie Allen with the Forest Service.
Authorities said one abandoned home and a shed received damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
