NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Maria Teresa Heyer, 5, of downtown Brooklyn says she's feeling "really good." The first grader at Sacred Heart and St. Stephens parish was one of five children selected from the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens to welcome Pope Francis to New York City at JFK Airport..
Pope Francis kissed Maria Teresa's forehead after getting off the plane Thursday and blessed her. The moment was captured by an Associated Press photographer.
"He is such a symbol of peace and one of us- an ordinary person," said Maria Heyer. "I didn't even know it happened. I saw him as he approached the children and when he blessed them. I saw it last night. I was sobbing when he went to all of them. It was really an incredible moment I was star-struck."
