Vikings to install ‘lactation pods' for breastfeeding moms at stadium

- The Minnesota Vikings announced Tuesday that they’ll be the first NFL franchise to install lactation suites for nursing mothers in an NFL stadium.  The pods are expected to be installed in time for the Vikings-Chiefs game on Oct. 18.

The mobile units, created by Mamava, include comfortable benches, an electrical outlet for plugging in a breast pump and a door that can be locked for privacy.

“Creating a family-friendly environment and a positive experience for all fans at our football games is paramount to the Minnesota Vikings,” Vikings Chief Operating Officer Kevin Warren said. “While we certainly encourage breastfeeding mothers to nurse where they feel comfortable, we have become increasingly aware of the need many moms have for the privacy and comfort that these Mamava lactation suites provide.”

As of now, two will reside in the Vikings corporate offices and two will be located at TCF Bank Stadium. They will continue to be installed at the new U.S. Bank Stadium, where officials are also exploring the idea of having a nursing area for moms to stay connected to the game.

“Until now, female NFL fans who have wanted privacy for feeding have had to nurse or pump in a bathroom, or worse yet, stay home due to the lack of amenities for nursing” Sascha Mayer, co-founder of Mamava, said.

The suites will provide support not just to NFL employees and fans, but also for attendees of other events including University of Minnesota Gophers football and the Super Bowl in 2018.
