ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35)
A 15-year-old boy has been injured and hospitalized after authorities say he dared a friend to light him on fire in an Orlando neighborhood. Now, Orange County deputies say they may file culpable negligence charges against the juveniles involved in the case.
The aunt of Robert Seals says he is suffering from severe burns and had to be flown to a Cincinnati hospital after his condition deteriorated. "I saw the flame flick and my nephew went running, hollering this way, on fire," said Lisa Oliphant. "His throat was in bad shape, pretty swelled up and everything. He's going out to Cincinnati for the burn unit up there."
Neighbor Michael Winn says he walked outside when he heard someone screaming. "I come running out and see what's going on, and he's out here jumping all over the place. You can see burning, skin peeling off and eyebrows and everything else getting burnt."
Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jane Watrel says that a group of teenagers were daring each other to do stunts. Watrel says a boy in the group doused himself in flammable liquid and told his friend to hold a lit match to his clothes. Authorities say the friend followed the directions, and the victim received second-degree burns on his arms and back.
"Tried to calm him down get him cooled down as quick as possible,e so it wouldn't spread any more than what it was... didn't lose more skin," explained Oliphant. She said the fire game is part of a social media challenge that has been around for months.
"It's stupid to see it, because they got them posted on there and kids don't understand what it is," said Winn. "They see all these burn marks and everything, and they want to go through it themselves." He added that he hoped the teenager would be ok. "Everybody's got prayers out and everything else, so we're hoping it's getting better."
