GOP candidate Dr. Ben Carson visits Central Florida

FOX 35 News at 11 p.m.

- Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson was in The Villages on Monday, signing books and chatting with supporters.  Some estimate close to 1,000 people were to be expected at the event.  For many  who came, excitement at being up close and personal with a Presidential candidate brewed all day.

Sandi Uram, of The Villages, held down the number one spot in line since 4:30 a.m. while she waited to see Dr. Ben Carson. "Because I think this will be my chance to get close to our next president."

That chance to be within arm's reach of a presidential candidate is what drew Stephanie Puerto all the way from Tampa. "I'm going to tell him, 'Thank You so much.' We need someone in power that is honest, courageous."

Nancy Wigger, of The Villages, said Carson's presence here in The Villages speaks to his efforts to court senior voters in Central Florida.  "He realizes that the demographics are 115,000 older adults are here, and our generation, and our generation is the generation that votes," Wigger explained. "This is one of the stops he should be making once a month."

People like Barbara Walter, of The Villages, said there's just something about Carson that makes her light up inside.  "He's a gentle Ben. I like his intelligence," Walter explained. "I like his soft mannerism. I like that he is an outsider."
