Elderly Ormond Beach woman fends off would-be burglar

Volusia County deputies say a 79-year-old woman confronted a burglar inside her home on Monday night.  It happened around 11 p.m. at the Villa Sereno condominiums on Ocean Shore Boulevard, near Ormond Beach.
"The victim came home to find some things out of place in her townhouse, such as a door ajar and her laptop not the way she had left it. Then the victim heard the sound of footsteps coming from the upstairs of her residence. When she started walking up the stairs to investigate, she encountered a female intruder coming down the stairs," explained Gary Davidson, Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
The woman said the stranger had been hiding in her closet.  She said she confronted the woman and tried to grab her by the arms to restrain her, but the suspect broke free and bolted out of the residence.  She later noticed some of her jewelry was missing .
Deputies tied this burglary attempt to another incident earlier in the evening.  That led them to  an address on John Anderson Drive, where they located Amber Birchfield.  Deputies said Birchfield admitted to taking the jewelry and initially offered to return the items if the victim wouldn't press charges. But after she was told that no deal would be made, she turned over some of the missing jewelry.
Birchfield, 30, was arrested on charges of burglary and theft.
