Daytona Beach police search for escaped suspect

FOX 35 News at 5 p.m.

- Police want people to be on the lookout for a suspect who escaped from officers while under arrest Monday night.  According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, officers arrested Theodrick Cooper, 37, for driving without a license, giving a false name to police officers and multiple outstanding warrants.

An officer transported Cooper from the arrest location at 129 S. Grandview Avenue to the Beachside Precinct on Harvey Avenue.  The report from the incident states that Cooper was considered a flight risk, so backup was requested  to help with transferring him from the patrol car to the prisoner transport van.

While officers waited for backup, Cooper asked to use the restroom. According to the arrest report, as the officer escorted Cooper back to the transport van from the restroom, Cooper escaped. Cooper's hands were cuffed in front of him.

Department spokesman James Churko told FOX 35 “a mistake was made” and the department was looking into it. He said more than one officer should have escorted Cooper to the restroom. Churko said investigators and officers searched for Cooper all day Thursday to no avail and they do not know where he’s headed.

Cooper was last seen wearing a black and white striped shirt, dark jeans and brown boots.  He has the name “Latoya” tattooed on his neck.

Anyone who spots Cooper can leave an anonymous tip for officers by texting 274637 or visiting www.dbpd.us and clicking "Anonymous Web Tips."
