ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Former House Speaker and Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich came to Central Florida to speak to tourism executives at a Visit Orlando function.
"I'm always glad to be back in Orlando and its a great city to visit," said Gingrich, who sat down for an exclusive interview with FOX 35 Political Reporter Mike Synan and Caitlin Dineen from our news partners at the Orlando Sentinel. He told the pair Donald Trump's amazing rise is a natural reaction.
"He articulates for millions of people what they believe, and the fact is there are a lot of people very fed up with a Washington government that refuses to be honest about our problems, refuses to be honest about terrorism, refuses to be honest about the source of that terrorism."
Gingrich believes Donald Trump went too far when calling for a halt on Muslims being allowed to enter the US, but understands why Trump said what he did.
"You have Trump on one extreme and Obama on the other. Obama wants to explain to us that anyone can come over because we can trust the government, and Trump is saying they can't come because you can't trust the government, and the truth is in the middle. We need a much better vetting process."
Gingrich had plenty to say about failures in the Obama Administration, calling the President and Secretary of State John Kerry "delusional".
"This administration sleep walks as if nothing's happened. You;re getting Trump in reaction to Obama. The weaker Obama is, the more people look for strength. even if the strength is misguided." When asked if he would support him as the nominee, Gringrich said, "I am going to support the Republican nominee, sure. I mean if the alternative is Hillary Clinton? It's very easy for me to support the Republican nominee."
Gingrich is not planning on endorsing a candidate in the Republican primary, but he did have complimentary things to say about two Floridians running, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio.
