Man drives into lake with wife, calls wrecker and not 911

A couple, who's truck was sinking into a lake on Reed Canal Road in Port Orange on Tuesday night., called a wrecker service for help, instead of 911.  The dispatcher for the wrecker service then called 911.

"I just had a man call me wanting us to pull him out and pull him out now. There's a woman in the background screaming and screaming, and she said 'I guess the caller is in the water.'"

Deputies, the dive team and Port Orange police officers showed up, but by that time, the husband was gone. According to the police report, the woman said she and her husband had been arguing a lot lately, and she said she believes her husband drove the truck into the lake on purpose to end her life. She said earlier in the day she told him she wanted a divorce, according to police.

Investigators say they wanted to talk to the man, face to face, but he left the scene before they got there. Police say he answered his cell phone and talked to them but would not meet them in person.

The woman told police she and her husband had been drinking.
