A surfer was in the right place to help a Georgia teen who was struggling in the water off Daytona Beach.

Kyle Morris says he'd been surfing for about an hour Thursday when he heard a man yelling for help and pointing at the water. The 20-year-old Embry Riddle Aeronautical University student says he started paddling because lifeguards were still on shore.

Morris tells The Daytona Beach News-Journal he was able to hoist the boy onto his surfboard.

The boy started coughing up water. Morris says he told the boy to try to remain calm until help arrived. Lifeguard helped get the teen to shore.

Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Morris says the boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
