Tallahassee mayor decides against congressional run

- After weeks of speculation, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum said Friday he will not run this year in the newly redrawn Congressional District 5.

"My reflections have shown me that my heart is with the city of Tallahassee,'' Gillum, a Democrat, said in a prepared statement. "I will continue to assess how I can best serve our community and state in the future, but I am committed to fulfilling my term and building on the tremendous progress we have already made."

Longtime U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., represents District 5, but a new redistricting plan is expected to lead to major changes in the boundaries.

The district currently runs from Jacksonville to Orlando. But under the redistricting plan, which stems from a legal fight, the district will go from Jacksonville to Gadsden County, which is west of Tallahassee. Brown is challenging the new map in federal court.
