ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Orange County Animal Services is finding success in social media as a way to save animals and place them in homes of those interested in adopting.

A recent example is a 5-month-old bind pit bull puppy named Rue, which captured the hearts of hundreds on Facebook.  Within a matter of hours, Rue's Facebook post had been shared by almost 200 people, officials with animal services tell FOX 35.  The dog received an adoption application the next day.

"When I saw her, I fell in love with her, and it didn't matter that she was blind," said Jacqueline Lipka, the puppy's adopter.

"Facebook has been a great outlet for us to promote our current events and adoptable animals," Dil Luther, Division Manager of Orange County Animal Services, said.

Animal Services is close to reaching a landmark of 5,000 Facebook fans and can be reached at www.facebook.com/orangecountyanimalservices.

Orange County Animal Services is Central Florida's largest pet rescue and adoption center. Last year, Animal Services received nearly 23,000 animals at its shelter.
