Orlando's largest church is trying to figure out who took thousands of dollars from their offering plates.
Leaders at the First Baptist Church of Orlando said the money was stolen after Sunday services on July 15th. It seems, when church staff went to count the money, they found they were really short a total of almost $50,000.
Church goers were silent when they heard the news. Jessica Griswold told us, "They are big on helping people, and that would be a shame if somebody took something from them."
Church leaders say they are praying for the person who took the money, but can't figure out why someone would. The church gives thousands of dollars a week to those in need.
"We are sad that someone felt that desperate to take that much money. This is not our money, this is God's money," said Pastor Danny de Armas.
Many of the donations were from checks, which means that someone took names and addresses of church members and their personal information is now in the wrong hands; however, there have been no reports of identity thefts.
Detectives are not yet ruling out someone from the inside as a possible suspect.
