SeaWorld to put trainers back in the water with killer whales

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Trainers at SeaWorld marine parks on Monday began a process to get its killer whales acclimated to having humans in the water with them, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting.

The process, known as "water desensitization," comes just two weeks after an independent commission announced its findings in a review of citations levied against SeaWorld by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

SeaWorld trainers haven't been in the water with whales since 2010.  It was in late February of that year that trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed by a whale at SeaWorld Orlando.

OSHA said SeaWorld trainers should never again be allowed to have close contact with the whales during performances, unless protected by barriers.  The fed's restrictions only apply to performances, however, and not to training pools.

Water desensitization will take place in "medical pools" with new rising, false bottoms that can lift the trainer and whale out of the water in case of an emergency.
