Staff caring for puppy born without front legs

Staff members at Osceola Animal Control have taken a 4-and-a-half week old puppy born without fully developed front legs into their care.

Oscar, a mixed-breed puppy, is named after Olympian Oscar Pistorius, the South African track star who competed in the London 2012 Olympic Games wearing prosthetic legs.

Oscar is thriving with the care and seems to love the attention given him by his new family. Nine months ago, a pug-mix named Mandy arrived with a similar condition. In a visit back to the shelter, staff members said it is clear that the puppy has adjusted to life without the use of her front legs.

"The treatment these dogs received shows the caring nature of our Animal Control staff," said Commissioner Brandon Arrington. "Oscar and Mandy also prove that residents can find the perfect pet at Animal Control. Most kennel animals seem to know you've adopted them. They know you care about them and in my experience, they make the happiest pets."
Bonnie Duncan of St. Cloud is glad she adopted Mandy.

"She has been such a joy and a blessing. She is just so happy. She just makes the whole atmosphere of our home just a better place to live," Duncan said.
