Suspect in Merritt Island murder sought

Posted: Updated:

Brevard County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a gunman who shot a 21-year-old man in Merritt Island on Monday.   Deputies said the shooting happened at the Tropical Manor Apartments just before 10 p.m.

The victim, Evander Tinsley, of Cocoa, was shot several times in the complex after he came to visit two female friends who lived in an upper level apartment, according to deputies.  Preliminary reports that Tinsley got into an altercation with another person which resulted in the fatal shooting.  Investigators said emergency responders attempted to revive Tinsley on their way to an area hospital, but he died along the way.

Detectives spent most of early morning hours gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, and are following several potential leads, they hope, will put them closer to identifying a suspect.

Family and friends of Tinsley gathered at the scene early Tuesday morning, describing him as caring, self-less, and hard-working.   They also said he was maintaining two jobs -- one at a local Walmart and the other at a UPS store.   Neighbors we spoke to said they are grieving and mourning his loss.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information on this shooting to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
