SEBASTIAN INLET, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A 21-year-old surfer is recovering after being bitten by a shark on Tuesday afternoon just north of Sebastian Inlet.
Brandon Taylor, a Sebastian resident, was bitten around 4:30 p.m. near Whitey's Fishing Outfitters tackle shop, which is located about 2 miles north of the inlet.
Taylor said he started paddling over a deep trough of water roughly 25 yards offshore when the shark swam up beneath his board and bit his left arm.
He returned to shore, wrapped his leash around his arm to try to control the bleeding and called 911. A friend drove him to an Indian River County Fire Rescue station, where he was treated and transported by ambulance to Sebastian River Medical Center. The shark inflicted three cuts which required 18 stitches, officials said.
Taylor estimated the shark measured anywhere from 2-and-a-half to 5 feet in length
