KISSIMMEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Charges are pending against an 86-year-old man whom investigators said blew right by a stopped school bus as children were crossing Simpson Road in Kissimmee.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), James Martin told troopers he did not see the flashing lights on the school bus stop arms when 16-year-old Jordan Velez was struck.
According to the FHP, Velez went flying in one direction and his shoes and his back pack in another.
A friend of the victim, 17-year-old Joshua Rodriguez, witnessed the incident. "We were just walking normal. He was listening to music and we were just going to the bus. It just came out of no where," he said. "I was just so shocked. I started crying and everything. I went to the counselors and told them it was just too much for me."
Velez remains in critical, but stable, condition. His grandmother tells FOX 35 that their main concern right now is that his brain is swelling.
