The owner of a Winter Park sushi restaurant was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon Sunday night after police say he shot at two customers during a dispute over the food.
Quoc Trong Tran, 55, the owner of Wazzabi, 1408 Gay Road near Winter Park Village, is accused of firing at James Marshall Phillips III and Destin McMahon as they tried to leave the parking lot. A Wazzabi employee, Hoai Tran, is accused of hitting the customers' vehicle, damaging it, and was charged with criminal mischief.
No one was hurt in the incident.
According to a Winter Park Police arrest report, Phillips and McMahon argued with the owner of Wazzabi, Quoc Trong Tran, over their food and service. Phillips told police he paid his bill, but Quoc Trong Tran said that McMahon did not.
The customers left the restaurant but were followed to their vehicle by Quoc Trong Tran, Hoai Tran and a third employee, Nasiruddin Bagman.
As Phillips tried to close his vehicle door, Quoc Trong Tran stepped between the door and the vehicle to prevent the men from leaving. Quoc Trong Tran and Hoai Tran then walked behind the vehicle, where Haoi Tran began to beat and kick the vehicle, leaving dents and damage, the report stated.
Phillips said that as he tried to pull out of the parking lot, he heard a gunshot. A bullet hole was found in the bumper of the vehicle.
Quoc Trong Tran told police he fired at the vehicle to prevent the customers from leaving.
Phillips and McMahon have not been charged.
