A judge has ruled that attorneys for a Florida neighborhood watch volunteer can inspect the school records and social media postings of the unarmed teenager he is accused of murdering.
Judge Debra S. Nelson said Friday that defendant George Zimmerman's attorneys need to know whether Trayvon Martin's school records and social media postings give any evidence that he had violent tendencies.
Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, said it may be relevant to know, "Everything he has said and done, although it sounds horrible to come before you and go after the victim in this case, but that is what the Sixth amendment says he have to do."
The 29-year-old Zimmerman fatally shot the 17-year-old Martin in February. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, saying he shot Martin in self-defense.
Trayvon Martin's mother told FOX 35 that she didn't want her son's school records made public. "I hope you all haven't forgotten my son, because I certainly haven't forgotten about him. It is important to remember he was a minor."
Judge Nelson said she is reviewing Zimmerman's medical records to see if they should be turned over to prosecutors. Nelson set another hearing for Oct. 26.
Zimmerman walked into the courthouse on Friday looking very different, having put on some weight since his last public appearance. His brother, Robert, told reporters that the weight gain was because George is mostly holed-up at home, "eating the same things."
Zimmerman's trial is scheduled for next June. A hearing on Zimmerman's self-defense claim has not been scheduled.
