Hurricane Sandy: Storm strengthens, threatens Jamaica, Cuba

T.S. watch extended to Brevard-Volusia line as Sandy strengthens to hurricane

MIAMI (AP) -

Sandy strengthened to a hurricane late this morning as it approached Jamaica and Cuba.

Hurricane Sandy has sustained winds of 80 mph and is about 65 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, according to National Hurricane Center forecasters.

A tropical storm watch along Florida's south east coast has been extended northward to the Volusia/Brevard County line.

Other watches and warnings have been issued for the Bahamas.

Sandy is moving north-northeast at 13 mph.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Tony has formed in the Atlantic, more than 1,000 miles west of the Azores. Forecasters say it poses no threat to land.

Forecasters said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph as it drifted about 1,500 miles from the Azores. Tropical storm-force winds extended about 45 miles east of the center.

The storm was expected to strengthen in the next day or so.
