Brooklynite Lekisha Smith tied the knot at the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando Friday night, but it almost didn't happen, after Superstorm Sandy slammed her Canarsie neighborhood on Monday.
"There was a moment while we were in the vehicle, the car stalled, the water was upon us, I honestly did not know how the situation was going to turn out," she said.
The couple lost their car and their home and spent days at a relative's house after the storm, trying to get a flight into Orlando for their wedding.
"It was just unreal at the moment," said Smith.
"I called American Airlines, pleading with them, 'I'm getting married on Friday! I need to get to Orlando Wednesday! I'm the bride!'"
But the earliest airlines told her she could get to Orlando was Saturday, the day after her planned wedding. So, they chartered a bus and drove down and arrived early Friday morning, hours before her magical moment at the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando.
Nearly a hundred of her guests from the Northeast made it to, after several cancellations.
"Thank God we were already packed, grabbed things essential to this day, and put them in my car!" she said. "We are really grateful that we were able to get out and be safe."
