MELBOURNE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) on Tuesday evening received confirmation from the Melbourne Police Department that two children, previously reported missing by child protection officials, had been safely located in California.

Law enforcement officials have also confirmed that the two children are physically ok and now in the custody of social workers.

The two children were reported missing by DCF last week after the family fled from child protective investigators during an active child abuse investigation.   Trieu "Kiah" Firth, 2, and Chieu "Kristin" Quan Firth, 4, were located with their parents, James Firth, 43, and Mai Dang Firth, 31.

The family resides in Vietnam and traveled to the United States to obtain treatment for Kristin, who has autism.  DCF officials said the parents were frustrated and distressed over the cost of the treatment.

Child protection officials in Florida are now working to make arrangements to travel to California to assume physical custody of the girls and return them to Florida.  Upon their return to Florida, they will be placed in protective custody, with an emergency custody hearing to take place.
