One of top elementary schools in Florida faces closure

COCOA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

One of the top elementary schools in the state -- recognized by NeighborhoodScout.com as the best public elementary school in the south -- is one of two Brevard County schools being considered for closure to save money.

Freedom 7 Elementary, an A+ school in Cocoa Beach, and Pinewood Elementary in Mims are two schools the Brevard School District wants to close to make up a budget shortfall.

The district thinks Freedom 7 will see declining enrollment after transportation to the school was cut, also to save money.

"It's very disappointing," said parent Carlos Prado, whose two daughters attended Freedom 7 Elementary.

"The level of education that my kids got is outstanding. I was member of SAC meeting for couple of years, and I know the staff well and how dedicated the staff is.

"I think the school board needs to look at other means of reducing costs instead of cutting and removing successful schools."

A meeting to discuss the proposed closure is scheduled for Tuesday. A final vote is scheduled for Jan. 22. If approved, the changes will go into effect next fall.
