OCOEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A 5-month-old girl was found unharmed this morning after the parked car in which she was waiting -- with a "Baby on Board" sign in the back window -- was stolen from a convenience store lot, police say.
At about 7:21 a.m., Sara Bayes, 21, had gone into a Kangaroo store on East Silver Star Road in Ocoee to buy a few items. She told authorities her baby daughter wasn't feeling well, so she decided to leave her in the running car to keep her warm.
While she was inside, a suspect jumped into the 2007 silver Dodge Caliber and drove off with the baby still inside.
Ocoee Police found the car, abandoned and still running, about 300 yards away, 10 minutes after receiving the emergency call.
The baby, still inside, was unharmed.
A witness at the Kangaroo store reported seeing a white man in his late 20s, with short hair and wearing jeans, drive off in the car.
Apopka Police K-9 units followed a scent from the abandoned car to a nearby mobile home park, Fox 35's Holly Bristow reports, but the suspect was not found.
Meanwhile, Bayes is being investigated for child-neglect violations and for leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.
Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Ocoee Police at 407-905-3160.
