Forecasters confirm tornado destroyed Edgewater homes

Posted: Updated:

A "high end EF-1 tornado" ripped through an Edgewater mobile home park early Monday evening, damaging about 40 homes, the National Weather Service in Melbourne has confirmed.

Forecasters made the determination today after further research and a damage survey.

The tornado struck at about 5:30 p.m. with estimated winds of 95 to 110 mph, the weather service said. Its path was approximately a mile, with a width of about 150 yards.

The tornado's damage was centered at Terra Mar Village and Jones Fish Camp Road.
About 40 homes were damaged; some had roofs torn off. Power lines were downed and trees uprooted.

Allison Staley told Fox 35's Valerie Boey her husband was inside their mobile home when the tornado struck.

"He said a big oak tree came through our front living room and missed him and my dog by inches. He's lucky to be alive."

Forecasters will issue a final update later today.
