David Does It: Marine begins 6-year walk for veterans

Posted: Updated:

A 51-year-old Marine sergeant on a six-year walk to the capitals of all 50 states to raise money and awareness for veterans passed through Central Florida this morning.

After 1,300 miles of his 15,000-mile journey, Sgt. Mac McQuown made it to Ocala, where Fox 35's David Martin caught up with him.

McQuown is raising funds for Project Foot, a nonprofit that offers support to homeless, fallen and wounded veterans.

People and businesses have reached out to McQuown, offering free food and lodging as he progresses through his journey.

"It's been phenomenal. People have come out of the woodwork to help me," McQuown said.

A Days Inn in Ocala is giving McQuown a free stay tonight.

"There's a term called 'trail magic,' when a stranger brings either food, water or their kindness. And it's been off the charts. It's been amazing," he said.

McQuown also welcomes company on his walk.

"Absolutely. I encourage people to join me," he said.
