Will teachers have guns in Lake County schools?

Lake school board member wants to allow staffers to carry guns

Posted: Updated:

A new Lake County School Board member who wants to see school administrators and teachers carrying guns in elementary schools says that each person who would want to carry a gun in a county school would be deputized.

Bill Mathias says he would like to see the idea implemented sooner rather than later.

"They would go to a mini police academy where they would be certified. They would know how to handle a weapon. They would know when and how to disarm a person. They then would have a psychological check, and they would be issued a weapon that the school district would pick."

Mathias said the Sandy Hook shooting brought the idea to the forefront, but he's more concerned about the possibility of a terror attack.

"If people know that if you try to come on to our campus, if you try to hurt one of our students, there's a good possibility you will leave in a body bag. That would be a deterrent for anyone hitting Lake County," he said.

"If you believe that there are those people out there that want to hurt Americans, and if there are those out there that don't believe in our ideas, then what better way to bring us to our knees than to attack our schools?" Mathias said.

Mathias believes a single school resource officer is not enough and could be easily overrun in a school attack.

"We're not talking about carrying Uzis on their backs. We're talking about typical concealed weapons, where it is not out in the public. When you look at Texas, the teacher is in there teaching, and they merely have a sidearm for protection."

Mathias believes Lake County can defend its schools for far less than the $3 million Orange County will spend placing school resource officers in all elementary schools. He also believes his method would be more effective.

Mathias also said he does not want to showboat or cram this idea down anyone's throat. He also understand that the concept is not a fully developed one, and there will be several challenges to overcome before teachers carrying guns would become a reality.

He will bring up the idea at the January 14 Lake County School Board meeting and see where it goes from there.
