Dwight Vazquez Sr. said his son was rushed inside Deltona Elementary School Thursday afternoon, moments after a neighbor fired shots close to the campus.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said a man who lives within a mile of the school fired shots in his backyard around 12:41 p.m. Investigators said he was performing target practice.
Vazquez said he first heard about the incident from his 5-year-old son. "(He said) my coach made us run into a classroom," said Vazquez. "And they locked all the doors, because there was someone shooting."
His son told then told FOX 35 what happened next. "We all rushed inside to watch a movie," said Dwight Vazquez Jr. "Then we went out when we didn't hear any guns again."
"My concern is that these people start shooting their guns in the air and those bullets come down and it hits one of the little kids," said Vazquez Sr.
Nancy Wait, a spokesperson for Volusia County School District, told FOX 35 the children were outside for gym at the time. Wait said the P.E. teacher then rushed the class inside the school building and called police.
Deputies later found the man. It turns out that he wasn't doing anything illegal, but investigators said he did promise not to practice during school hours.
"Maybe he was within his rights, but when so many things are going on at this time and the right to bear arms is such an issue right now in our country, we need to be a little bit more responsible in how we discharge our weapons especially for the sake of the children," said Vazquez Sr.
He said the school notified him two hours later, with the reverse, 911 automated message about the incident. He said the school did the right thing, but he wished he heard from them sooner.
Deputies in Seminole County were also called out to a scare at an elementary school in Seminole. Investigators said a parent thought another parent had a gun at Red Bug Elementary School, and called police. Deputies drove out to the school. The helicopter was dispatched. Investigators said deputies soon found the man, however, it turned out the man was a parent waiting to pick up his child. Investigators said he had a camera on him because he is a bird watcher.
