NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Volusia County deputies on Monday responded to a call from a neighbor who heard gunfire in a New Smyrna Beach neighborhood.

Minutes earlier, a man told a 911 operator, "They were running around with rifles! They were shooting towards houses!"

When deputies arrived, they said 18-year-old Jayln Newton was pointed out by witnesses as the shooter.  Newton and three friends, ages 13, 16 and 17, were all spotted by deputies on South Woodland Boulevard, attempting to dig their car out of the mud.

As deputies approached the car, they said they saw two handguns, three rifles, and 262 rounds of ammunition for weapons of various calibers.  When deputies were questioning the boys, they said Newton ran from them.  As he was running, he tripped and fell, leaving a large mark on the side of his face.

Deputies said Newton told them that he found the handguns in a cinder block in the area; however, a resident in the neighborhood told deputies that the guns were stolen from his home last Saturday.

Newton is in the Volusia County Jail on charges of grand theft, discharging a firearm in public, drug possession and armed trespassing.
