Lake County considering gas tax for road repairs

Posted: Updated:

Road work is far from cheap, and no matter where you are in Central Florida, it seems every county is patching potholes or widening and extending lanes to major thoroughfares.

In Lake County, officials are trying to keep up with the cost of fixing their aging roads, and it could wind up costing people more at the pump.  County commissioners are kicking around the idea of  adding a five-cent tax to every gallon of gas sold to help pay for the repairs.

Resident Pat Anderson sees the need, but she doesn't want to get stuck paying footing the bill.  "Well, the roads need repairing for sure, but we've been paying property taxes on that for years," she tells us.  Her husband normally drives this pick up truck and she said
it's not cheap to fill it up.

Ryan Carter started his own lawn business 18 months ago.  He had to raise his fees, because gas costs started cutting into his profits.  "I lost one or two clients," he said, adding that he is now working a second job to stay afloat.

County leaders said the gas tax would force tourists to help pay for the roads.
