Fat Cat Foods: Central Florida man's spicy family recipes win awards

Posted: Updated:

Diverse foods and flavors have always stuck with Eyal Goldschmid, who is part South American, part Middle-Eastern. Working hard to recreate the tastes, he played with spices and seasonings and made sauces that his friends fell in love with.

From his recipes came Fat Cat Foods.

"The friends come over and say, 'Wow, that's really good.' And little by little, they start asking you for a Tupperware of your sauce to bring it to our BBQ -- even though you're not invited," Goldschmid says.

After some research, Goldschmid met the people at International Packaging of Authentic Cuisine in Winter Springs.

"In order to make enough to market and make it worth your while, you have to do it on a larger scale. We're not a huge producer, but we're bigger than someone making it in their kitchen."

"We offer the facilities to do the manufacturing, with all the rules and regulations with the state, so they don't have to deal with all of that part of it," says Paul Adamission of International Packaging.

The family-run business has the tools to take Goldschmid from hopeful to hot.

"We take their recipe and convert it to a working formula for the plant, and we scale their product up," Adamission says.

The team needed a name. So when the family's fat cat sprawled out, the name came easily.

He says perfecting his concoction can be tricky sometimes.

"It'll taste one way today while we're making it. But after three weeks, after it sits in a bottle like a wine, even, it'll mature, and spices will come out even more," Goldschmid says. "So you have to think about where it's going as opposed to where it is."

"Our most popular is our Purry Purry sauce, which is actually a spin on South African. It's a mixture of tomato, ginger, garlic, onion and chili.  It's a mid-level heat, but it's a great condiment for grilled food."

While he continues to experiment with his exotic flavors, Fat Cat is being recognized by winning awards -- like one of the biggest national nods in the spicy-food industry.

"We understand there is a population out there that does want a new experience when they taste something, and that's really who we're gearing ourselves toward."

He's not trying to make the hottest of hot sauces on the market, he says. He just hopes to add a new flavor to your food.
