Carron Washington said he is a first year pre-med student at the College of Central Florida, but a potentially deadly medical decision has him behind bars.
Washington was arrested early Sunday morning after police said he gave his 2-month-old daughter, Caelynn, a baby bottle filled with milk and a cap full of bleach.
Caelynn's mother came into the room when she heard the baby's loud screams. She patted Caelynn's back and when the baby vomited, she smelled the bleach. They called 911 and Caelynn was rushed to the hospital.
From the Marion County Jail, Washington told FOX 35, "This is probably the dumbest decision I have ever made."
Washington said Caelynn was born with her esophagus not completely attached to her stomach and has had complications since she was born.
"I'll do whatever I have to do to see her again," Washington said.
Police said he originally lied about putting the bleach in the bottle, then confessed. Washington, 20, was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.
Caelynn is in good condition at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. She's expected to go home in a few days.
A spokesperson with the Florida Department of Children and Families says there will be an emergency custody hearing, with respect to the allegations made against Washington, scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, in Marion County.
