Gas leak prompts home evacuations, no-fly zone

Eight homes were evacuated and a no-fly zone instituted over an area in Deltona after a natural gas line was broken on Tuesday.

A 6-inch natural gas line was broken by a construction company doing boring work, prompting power to be shut off near the intersection of Deltona and Normandy boulevards.

"All of a sudden, this plume of, I would say, natural gas started erupting from the ground and that's when all the fire department crews were called over," said Paul Giangrasso, a resident in the neighborhood.

Authorities instituted a no-fly zone over the area, because of the potential danger from the natural gas. 

Four homes on Normandy and four on Deltona were evacuated, Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Brandon Haught said.
